Couto Filho,Cristovão Colombo de Carvalho; Saliba,Eloísa de Oliveira Simões; Rodriguez,Norberto Mario; Barbosa,Geraldo Sérgio Senra Carneiro; Freitas,Regeane Martins de; Resende,Matheus Pinheiro Diniz.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the flow of nitrogenous compounds, protein degradability, rumen degradation of total carbohydrate and organic matter and microbial efficiency in heifers subjected to diets containing corn silage, sugarcane or Tifton. For this purpose, the 2,6-diaminopimelic acid (DAPA) technique was adopted and analytical procedures for amino acids by HPLC were adapted. Six rumen-fistulated Holstein-Zebu heifers with 480 kg of initial BW and at 24 months of age kept in individual tie stalls were assigned to two 3 × 3 Latin squares. Omasal digesta dry matter and microbial dry matter flows were determined using the isolated, purified and enriched lignin (LIPE®) and DAPA markers, respectively. Isolated bacteria from rumen showed on...

2-Bromo-1,4-naphthoquinone: a potentially improved substitute of menadione in Apatone™ therapy BJMBR
Graciani,F.S.; Ximenes,V.F..
Apatone™, a combination of menadione (2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone, VK3) and ascorbic acid (vitamin C, VC) is a new strategy for cancer treatment. Part of its effect on tumor cells is related to the cellular pro-oxidative imbalance provoked by the generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) through naphthoquinone redox cycling. In this study, we attempted to find new naphthoquinone derivatives that would increase the efficiency of H2O2 production, thereby potentially increasing its efficacy for cancer treatment. The presence of an electron-withdrawing group in the naphthoquinone moiety had a direct effect on the efficiency of H2O2 production. The compound 2-bromo-1,4-naphthoquinone (BrQ), in which the bromine atom substituted the methyl group in VK3, was...

2-Methyl 2-butanol suppresses human retinoblastoma cells through cell cycle arrest and autophagy BJMBR
Li,Xiangyun; Zhu,Xiangxiang; Xu,Chong; Wu,Jianhua.
2-Methyl-2-butanol (MBT) is a chemical compound from the group of alcohols more specifically pentanols, which has shown an excellent anti-cancer activity in our previous study. However, its mechanism of action remains unclear. The present study was designed to investigate the anti-cancer effect of MBT on human retinoblastoma cells. The results showed that the use of MBT leads to HXO-RB44 cell death but is cytotoxic to normal cells at higher concentrations. It showed a dose- as well as a time-dependent inhibition of HXO-RB44 cells. P27 is a cell cycle inhibitory protein, which plays an important role in cell cycle regulation whereas cyclin-B1 is a regulatory protein involved in mitosis. MBT increased the cell cycle arrest in a dose-dependent manner by...

2-Phenitidine derivatives as suitable inhibitors of butyrylcholinesterase BJPS
Abbasi,Muhammad Athar; Aziz-ur-Rehman,; Qureshi,Muhammad Zahid; Khan,Farhan Mehmood; Khan,Khalid Mohmmed; Ashraf,Muhammad; Afzal,Iftikhar.
This manuscript reports the synthesis of a series of N-substituted derivatives of 2-phenitidine. First, the reaction of 2-phenitidine (1) with benzene sulfonyl chloride (2) yielded N-(2-ethoxyphenyl) benzenesulfonamide (3), which further on treatment with sodium hydride and alkyl halides (4a-g) furnished into new sulfonamides (5a-g). Second, the phenitidine reacted with benzoyl chloride (6) and acetyl chloride (8) to yield the reported N-benzoyl phenitidine (7) and N-acetyl phenitidine (9), respectively. These derivatives were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, ¹H-NMR, and EI-MS, and then screened against acetylcholinesterase, butylcholinesterase, and lipoxygenase enzyme, and were found to be potent inhibitors of butyrylcholinesterase alone.

30 years of research on insect galls in Brazil: a scientometric review Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Araújo,Walter Santos de.
Abstract The first systematic studies on insect galls in Brazil date to the early 20th century, after which research on insect galls remained dormant in the country, with interest not reviving until the 1980s. The aim of this study was is to document historical trends in publications about insect galls in Brazil over the last 30 years. Papers about insect galls and galling species in Brazil published in peer-reviewed journals from 1988 to 2017 were compiled. A total of 1,378 papers were analyzed, of which 182 addressed insect galls in Brazil. The results showed that the number of publications on the subject has been increasing over the last 30 years, and especially in the last decade. The diversity of journals that published on the subject has also been...

Gonzatto,Mateus Pereira; Böettcher,Gerson Nestor; Schneider,Leonardo André; Lopes,Ângelo Azeredo; Silveira Júnior,Jairo Camargo; Petry,Henrique Belmonte; Oliveira,Roberto Pedroso de; Schwarz,Sergio Francisco.
ABSTRACT: The 'Montenegrina' mandarin ( Citrus deliciosa Tenore) is widely cultivated in southern Brazil. This cultivar has a great tendency for alternate bearing, requiring thining of the fruit. However, the chemical thinners studied until now in this cultivar have not been successful. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyloxyacetic acid (3,5,6-TPA) on the production and fruit quality of the 'Montenegrina' mandarin, in comparison with hand thinning and the options of chemical thinning previously studied. Hand thinning and no thinning were used as controls. Ethephon was applied in three doses: 200mg L-1, 300mg L-1 or 200mg L-1 + 3% urea; or 3,5,6-TPA, in four doses: 10, 20, 30 or 40mg L-1. Fruits of the...

3D Dense Reconstruction of Plant or Tree Canopy Based on Stereo Vision CIGR Journal
Ni, Zhijiang; Burks, Thomas F..
Three dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the plant or tree canopy is an important step in order to measure canopy geometry, such as, height, width, volume, and leaf cover area. In this research, binocular stereo vision was used to recover the 3D information of the canopy. A revised camera calibration method was provided to calibrate the cameras in world coordinate system. Only two images were used to realize a dense reconstruction. These two images were firstly rectified to make sure the corresponding feature points in the left and right images were on the same horizontal line. An efficient large scale stereo matching (ELAS) algorithm was used to find the disparity map. The plant or tree canopy was finally reconstructed based on these calibrated camera...

3D front-face fluorescence spectroscopy for characterization of extra virgin olive oil and olive oil according to the spectral pattern CIGR Journal
Lleó, Lourdes; Hernández-Sánchez, Natalia; Ammari, Faten; Roger, Jean-Michel.
3D front-face fluorescence spectroscopy and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to differentiate between Extra Virgin Olive (EVOO) and Olive Oil (OO). The results show that 3D front-face fluorescence could be an effective tool to characterize EVOO and OO. Fourteen samples of olive oils were acquired directly from producers and from retail markets and their 3D fluorescence spectra were measured and analyzed. The first principal component of the PCA model retained the most important variability as a combination of freshness due to the presence of antioxidant compounds and chlorophyll; and of oxidation stage due to the presence of oxidation products. Olive oil samples presented different spectral pattern providing different scores for EVOO and OO in...

3D soil void space lacunarity as an index of degradation after land use change Agronomy
Santos, Carlos Renato dos; Antonino, Antônio Celso Dantas; Heck, Richard John; Lucena, Leandro Ricardo Rodrigues de; Oliveira, Alex Cristóvão Holanda de; Silva, Antonio Samuel Alves da; Stosic, Borko; Menezes, Romulo Simões Cezar.
In this work, lacunarity analysis is performed on soil pores segmented by the pure voxel extraction method from soil tomography images. The conversion of forest to sugarcane plantation was found to result in higher sugarcane soil pore lacunarity than that of native forest soil, while the porosity was found to be lower. More precisely, this study shows that native forest has more porous soil with a more uniform spatial distribution of pores, while sugarcane soil has lower porosity and a more heterogeneous pore distribution. Moreover, validation through multivariate statistics demonstrates that lacunarity can be considered a relevant index of clustering and can explain the variability among soils under different land use systems. While porosity by itself...

40Ar/39Ar ages (600-570 Ma) of the Serra do Azeite transtensional shear zone: evidence for syncontractional extension in the Cajati area, southern Ribeira belt Anais da ABC (AABC)
Machado,Rômulo; Dehler,Nolan M.; Vasconcelos,Paulo.
This paper presents 40Ar/39Ar ages of the rocks from the Serra do Azeite transtensional shear zone in the southern part of the Ribeira belt, between the States of São Paulo and Paraná, and also discusses the regional correlations and the tectonic implications for other parts of the belt. The geochronological data suggest that transtensional deformation was active between 600 and 580 Ma (hornblende and muscovite apparent ages, respectively). This time span is considerably older than previous proposals for the period of activity of these structures (520-480 Ma) in the northern segment of this belt and in the Araçuaí belt. Kinematic analysis of the dated mylonites shows extensional structures with top-down movement to ESE compatible with structures found in...

40K, 226Ra AND 228Ra SERIES IN BOVINE AND POULTRY FEED AND IN DICALCIUM PHOSPHATE (DCP) SAMPLES BY GAMMA-RAY SPECTROMETRY BABT
Luz Filho,Isaias Venancio da; Scheibel,Viviane; Appoloni,Carlos Roberto.
The aim of this study is to determine the amounts of radionuclides' activity present in samples of feed for young and adult chicken and feed for dairy and beef cattle, as well as in dicalcium phosphate (DCP) (CaHPO4), used as a nutritional supplement for animal feed. Radioactivity in these samples is due to the presence of the 238U and 232Th radioactive series, as well as their daughter. In addition, as it is for environmental samples, the activity of 40K should be an important source of radioactivity in all analyzed samples. Gamma rays were measured using a standard spectroscopy system, with a high-resolution HPGe detector. Measured activities in feed samples ranged from 0.23 to 1.51 Bq.kg-1, 0.67 to 4.21 Bq.kg-1, 0.29 to 1.63 Bq.kg-1 and 236 to 402...

4-Nerolidylcatechol induces autophagy in human glioblastoma cells BJPS
Massaro,Renato Ramos; Brohem,Carla Abdo; Almeida,Rebeca Leite de; Rivelli,Diogo Pineda; Miyake,Juliano Andreoli; Colquhoun,Alison; Barros,Silvia Berlanga de Moraes; Maria-Engler,Silvya Stuchi.
ABSTRACT Gliomas account for the majority of primary malignant brain tumors and present invasive behavior into adjacent healthy tissue. While 4-NC had previously shown to induce apoptotic cell death in a melanoma model, for the glioma model described in this paper 4-NC is cytotoxic for the cells with the induction of the autophagic pathway. Trypan blue exclusion assay showed that 4-NC was cytotoxic in a dose-dependent manner for A172 and T98G cell lines. IC10 and IC50 values were at 32 µM and 41 µM for A172 and T98G respectively. Inhibition of cell proliferation was observed by total cell counts and by cell cycle analysis by flow cytometry, with cell cycle arrest of A172 and T98G cell lines respectively in the G1/G0 and S phases of the cell cycle. 4-NC...

Abstract Background: There is still a need for new alternatives in pharmacological therapy for neglected diseases, as the drugs available show high toxicity and parenteral administration. That is the case for the treatment of leishmaniasis, particularly to the cutaneous clinical form of the disease. In this study, we present the synthesis and biological screening of eight 4-phenyl-1,3-thiazol-2-amines assayed against Leishmania amazonensis. Herein we propose that these compounds are good starting points for the search of new antileishmanial drugs by demonstrating some of the structural aspects which could interfere with the observed activity, as well as suggesting potential macromolecular targets. Methods: The compounds were easily synthesized by the...

5-Bromo-2’-deoxyuridine induces visible morphological alteration in the DNA puffs of the anterior salivary gland region of Bradysia hygida (Diptera, Sciaridae) BJMBR
de Almeida,J.C.; Sauaia,H.; Viana,J.C..
5-Bromo-2’-deoxyuridine (BrdUrd) has long been known to interfere with cell differentiation. We found that treatment ofBradysia hygida larvae with BrdUrd during DNA puff anlage formation in the polytene chromosomes of the salivary gland S1 region noticeably affects anlage morphology. However, it does not affect subsequent metamorphosis to the adult stage. The chromatin of the chromosomal sites that would normally form DNA puffs remains very compact and DNA puff expansion does not occur with administration of 4 to 8 mM BrdUrd. Injection of BrdUrd at different ages provoked a gradient of compaction of the DNA puff chromatin, leading to the formation of very small to almost normal puffs. By immunodetection, we show that the analogue is preferentially...
